Calixte Henry

Calixte Henry was born in Port-au_Prince, Haiti in 1933 . He began painting in 1955 at the Centre d’Art, where for four years he studied under Philomé Obin. He opened his own studio in 1959. In the mid 60’s he joined the Galerie Monnin. In the 1980’s he received a fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation which led to a three year stay in New York.
He is strongly influenced by the impressionists and cubists, as well as certain Haitian artists. He is particularly inspired by Braque’s sense of design and Suerat’’s mastery of color. As his methods evolved, Henry bagan to experiment with razor blades as a means of applying the paint. Soon he completely abandoned his brushes and moved on to painting exclusively with a palette knife.

A highly respected artist who has carved an important niche in the history of Haitian art, Henry has been widely exhibited in France and Switzerland, as well as in Haiti and the U.S., and he has inspired and trained many younger artists.
