Omari Ra (Robert Cookhorne)
Omari Ra was born Robert Cookhorne in Kingston, Jamaica in 1960. He emerged as an artist of note under the pseudonym “African” - a name
he has recently change to Omari Ra. He is a graduate of the Jamaica School of Art where he later taught. Omari Ra is one of the most significant artist of his generation - a generation that broke from tradition and embraced modernism. The
art and culture publication “Revue Noire” wrote about his work in 1992:
“There are two aspects in his paintings. One is monochrome and abstract, made out of dark colours, and the other, unlimited where he uses a free figuration. One
of his main concerns is the link between Africa and the Caribbean.”
Among his many exhibitions since 1985 are Suti Gallery, Bern, Switzerland, 1986, 1990; Annual National Exhibition, National Gallery of Jamaica, 1983-2003;
“Caribbean Art Now”, Commonwealth Institute, England, 1986; “New Imagists in Jamaican Art”, OAS Gallery, Washington, DC, 1987; “Exposisicion Entre Topicos”, Museo de Arte Contemporaneo, Caracas, Venezuela, 1992; Fifth Havana Biennial,
Havana, Cuba, 1994.
He has been featured in a number of publications including “Modern Jamaican Art”, Ian Randle Publishers; “Art Today”, Phaidon Press; and Revue Noire Magazine.
